“NONE OF THEM HAD SO MUCH FUN UP TILL NOW”

Three women in the kitchen! They are talking with each other, it’s nothing but a casual, useless chat… Which is never ever recorded by the history, art, theatre plays or whatever!

Three women who are having fun together in a kitchen which buries the traditional representation of the “womanhood”, test their courage to exist on the stage along with their empty moments which seem to be inconsistent regarding the distinction between theory and practice.

oyun deposu

In 2007, 5 women artists, Elif Ürse, Ceren Ercan, Yelda Baskın, Gülce Uğurlu and Maral Ceranoğlu initiated “oyun deposu” with the aim of finding a place for what’s contemporary in Turkey in the theatre stage. The collective, at their first play Çirkin İnsan Yavrusu / Ugly Human-ling, chose to follow the traces of composed polarization in Turkey’s political ground and it’s effects on daily life. The play was written around the idea of questionize the outsiders of this country and what they are exposed to and it set out with three women, a Kurdish woman, a headscarfed woman and a homosexual woman. oyun deposu is creating their own texts, with this first work won the Lions Public Jury Award for Most Unique Theatre Play of the year.

oyun deposu played Çirkin İnsan Yavrusu in cities like Bern, Zürih, Basel, Vienna (Wiener Festwochen), Gratz, Strasbourg (Festival Premieres), Berlin (Hebbel Theater), Wiesbaden (New Plays From Europe), Mülheim (Theater a.d. Ruhr), and the play have been translated in English, German and French. The play’s text have been published by Germany’s most significant theatre magazine Theater Heute.

The collective, with their second play, Aptal, Sıradan ve Suçlu / Stupid, Ordinary and Guilty, have opened a discussion on woman sexuality and questioned the common “womanhood” values. Female actresses played the “women” with the aim to make this performance a face off both for the collective and the audience.  The play has been invited to the significant theatre festivals in cities like Hamburg (Thalia Theater), Vienna (Volks Theater) and Heidelberg (Stückemarkt). Stupid, Ordinary and Guilty is still taking the stage in İstanbul, at Çıplak Ayaklar Studio.
